Futbol Locura
Yesterday, we went to a futbol (soccer) game here - last yr we attended a game as well - however, this game was River vs. Racing (the 2nd biggest rivalry and currently 2 highest rated teams). needless to say a big game and quite the scene. very hard to describe the energy that is in the stadium for these type of games but i will say there is really no U.S. sporting equivalent. the closest is a big college football rivalry game (think mich v ohio st.). anyway, we went with our friend claudio, and met up with a few other friends, andrea, monica and martin - however since we were late we didnt get seats! so we had to angle for a spot to see the game (claudio sat on the narrow wall). we root for River (since this is near the neighborhood where we are living) and also happens to be the team of choice for most of our friends here. The game - basically the entire game there are chants, songs, drums, just general craziness. however after halftime, river finally broke the tie and scored a goooooool, then the festivities really got underway. The songs became progressively louder, and filled with more vulgarities... (think you have no father, your mother sells her body etc...) basically directed at the opposing clubs fans. the fans are sitting in separate sections (with literally no way of getting to the other section) many armed police in btwn as well. the sections behind the respective goals are the craziest - kind of like the bleachers at yankee st. well the crowd went home happy as river won and is now alone in 1st place, we had a great time and anyone that is a sports fan has to go to a futbol game once in their life (either in europe or latin america). next wk i hope to go to Maracana stadium in Rio - the worlds largest futbol stadium.
kathy tooks some video from her camera (those digital cameras are amazing) so when we get back we can show anyone who is interested in seeing the locura!
