davis cup
saturday i went to the davis cup here with my friend gabriel. the davis cup is like the world cup for tennis and argentina was matched vs. sweden. i have been to the u.s. open and other tennis tournaments but the atmosphere at a davis cup event is really different. the crowd treats it like a soccer game, waving flags, singing songs, very enthusiastic - basically very un-tennis like.other highlights included a maradonna sighting. diego maradonna is a g-d here. he is responbile for their last world cup(soccer) win and obviously futbol is the most important argentine activity. when "the" diego entered the stadium the whole crowd became electric (he was there just to watch). people began to stand and then started the songs, the crowd whipped into a frenzy, ole ole ole ole di-ego di-ego etc... and on and on. hard to overstate or describe the love many people feel for him here. when we were leaving we happen to catch his exit as well - hordes of paparazzi, press and regular fans literally chasing him to his car. fame has its dark side as well....
argentina won handily and are on to the next round vs. croatia (the u.s. won their opening round as well) which begins in april. today begins another tennis tournament here and we will probably try to go one day this week.
