Cooking Classes

Today I started my first cooking class, Argentina style. I was lucky enough to be able to join a Thai cooking class at Lotus Neo Thai restaurant. Lotus is a delicious, authentic Thai restaurant in Las CaƱitas on Ortega y Gasset. One thing that Buenos Aires lacks is many authentic SouthEast Asian restaurants. I think this has to do with several factors:
1 Argentines don't eat spicy food
2 There is not a large Southeast Asian community here (at all)
There is in fact a pretty large Chinese (I think mainly from Taiwan) and Korean community here. There is even a Chinatown in Belgrano that stretches a few blocks.

The classes are taught by an Argentine named Cecilia Carena. She is the owner of the restaurant and first learned how to cook Thai food from a Thai chef when she was living in Switzerland. After learning everything she could from the chef in Switzerland she later went Thailand for a few months to learn everything she could firsthand. Lotus has been open for over 10 years now.

The class began today at 1130 this morning and we had the pleasure of watching Cecilia at work as well as throwing in a few helping hands. There were a total of 6 students in the class, 3 Argentines, a German, a British and myself. We spent the next couple of hours in the kitchen of the restaurant watching Cecilia cook. She gave us lots of helpful hints, answered our questions and also gave us the recipes for what we eat today. Our lunch feast consisted of a cold Calamari salad, Chicken and Ginger Coconut Milk soup, Stirfried pork with Green Beans and Peanuts and for dessert Mango with Thai Sticky rice cooked in Coconut milk. Class two is next Saturday!
