More random thoughts
As our time here in Bs. As. is coming to a close i thought i would just post some random thoughts about life here , differences, and things i find interesting...There is a very real nostaglia for former rock groups from the 60's and 70's that is on a scale that is a little hard to believe. they have cover bands (basically a band performing only 1 group's songs in a concert setting, essentially an imitation of the real band) these cover bands who cover U2, pink floyd, led zepplin, the beatles, queen, the rolling stones, genesis and who knows who else play in real venues and are very popular.
One common thing about living here (and i suspect) is the same around the world around the u.s. to varying degrees, is when you first tell people you are from the united states there are a few common reactions. 1st) wow you can speak (a little) spanish or insert another foreign language!! 2nd) bush, bush, #@!@#! bush why?how? etc... this then leads to - at the minimum - a 20 minute discussion of U.S. politics 101, how i live in nyc and we dont like him either etc... its actually fairly amazing that people here are probably more interested/knowledgeable about us politics than people at home. another common thing is to discuss why americans call themselves that? when they share the Americas with everyone from canada to costa rica to argentina. the people here usually call them norteamericanos, yanquis or something like that. it kind of points to the u.s. arrogance towards the rest of the world. (at least that is the opinion in much of latin america) if anyone is still reading and has an answer as to why we do that please let us know!
other notable things here, when u see someone with those white ipod headphones u know they are foreign most likely from the u.s. (hey at least i changed my headphones) and in general foreigners use walkmans a lot more in public than people here do. on the buses, subways etc... people read but walkmans are a small % of people.
more music stuff, the english music station, Aspen classic, is fantastic. they play a completely random mix of music from the uk and us in an hr u will hear sade, bob marley, joss stone, rolling stones, depeche mode etc... but they seem to steer more to music from the uk - u dont really here bruce springsteen, pearl jam and the like as much.
more random thoughts to follow - for all those interested we will be home exactly 2wks from today. looking forward to seeing and talking to everyone real soon.
