Lunch at Lily's

Shortly after we arrived in the Kayamundi, we had lunch at Lily's. She cooked us a huge meal that started with a soup of brown beans and corn. Several dishes followed – butternut squash mixed with corn, chakalaka (a cold baked bean dish with tomato and onion), curry chicken, rice mixed with a barley like grain called mealy meal, spinach and fresh steamed bread. The meal was delicious and we spent an hour with Lily learning her life story and meeting her daughters. She is a cook by profession and makes everything in her small kitchen and her even tinier oven. Her life story is sad (she grew up in townships and left an abusive husband) but she is full of hope for the future. She understands the importance of education for her family and scraps together enough money to send her daughters to a school that is over an hour away. Her daughters understand the sacrifice their mom is making and work hard in school. The younger daughter (in the pink dress) wants to be a doctor. Posted by Picasa
